I guess we go about our business in a regular daily habit. It was 5:00 am and I was opening my inbox as I do every morning. Deleting the usual lot of junk emails, including the regular one advising me that my Telstra login was lost and I should re- enter my personal details to re-activate the account. I hovered over one email advising that we had been given an award by Tripadvisor. Interrogating the email further and looking at the links, it became apparent that it was a genuine email sent by Tripadvisor
Opening it up, I sat there eyes wide open, still disbelieving. It must have been a minute or so that I spent looking, checking and in somewhat disbelief that what I was reading was true
Tripadvisor had given the escarpment retreat the honour of a top 10 international award for being amongst the best retreats in the South Pacific. More accurately, Tripadvisor’s travellers, ie our guests, had given us this award
We have been so focused on doing what we do, ie to give everyone a wonderful experience, that we hadnt noticed what was building up around us. The volume and the quality of the feedback that guests had been leaving on Tripadvisor had reached such a high level that it was accelerating outside normal local levels and putting us on the international stage
To be honest, we would have been happy to know that we were amongst the best on Mount Tamborine. To know that we were amongst the best on the Gold Coast would have given us tremendous satisfaction. However, if we had achieved recognition as a top Queensland performer then we would indeed be in a unique position. To be selected on a national level, we would then be compared with others internationally which would be beyond our wildest beliefs. However, to be recognised as a leader (top 10 retreats in the South Pacific), puts us into a league that we had never contemplated and leaves me speechless. I still dont really know what to say apart from a very humble “thank you”
We had never set out to achieive this award, simply to make guests stays happy. We always look in front of us when we are travelling somewhere. However, it is only when we stop, turn around and look back that we can truly appreciate just how far we have gone on our journey.
This international recognition will not change things around here one little squidgeon though, it’s steady on and business as usual at the escarpment retreat ….now back to the next email in my inbox
