One of the most amazing birds on Mt Tamborine is Albert’s lyrebird as it has a very interesting bird call. Normally birds like to breed when it is warm but the lyrebirds prefer winter. There are 2lyrebird species and they are both accomplished mimics. The other type of lyrebird is known as the Superb lyrebird and it’s territory extends from south Queensland to Victoria. However the Albert’s lyrebird is only found in south east Qld and north east NSW. They are very shy which means that you are more likely to hear them than to see them The best time to hear and see them is very early in the morning in the forests. They can make several different calls in quick succession – maybe a whipbird, satin bowerbird, kookaburra or grey shrike-thrush for instance – plus a few other less known bird soundse sounds all apparently coming from the same area. If you do hear this sort of pattern, chances are you just heard a male Albert’s lyrebird courting or staking his territory.
