Police Dog Bosun— injured in the line of duty
Police Dog (PD) Bosun is a local hero. Based close to Mt Tamborine at the Coomera Dog squad. PD Bosun is a seven-year old German shepherd who was involved in the search and arrest of suspects for the killing of Detective Senior Constable Damian Leeding last year.
Police dogs including Buson, have been a great asset for the police service. They faithfully serve their handler without fear for their own safety. The dog handlers spend more time with their dog than they do with their own family and as a result form a special bond with their dog.
In the afternoon of the 28th February this year, PD Bosun and his handler were called to assist at another potentially dangerous search and arrest of a suspect in Upper Coomera. The suspect person was allegedly attempting to evade arrest via the rear of the suspect’s property, PD Bosun & his handler proceeded to that location to assist with the arrest. Unfortunately there were two dogs in the rear yard (believed to be pit bull terriers) that attacked PD Bosun and one of the dogs latched onto Bosun’s front leg.
Open hand tactics, capsicum spray and eventually a taser was used to get the dog to release its bite. The suspect was arrested by other police who also attended.
Bosun was rushed for emergency medical treatment. There was a fear of broken bones but luckily this was not the case. He suffered lacerations and tissue damage. Bosun is recovering well and having a well earned break and will be back on duty very soon.
Senior Constable Algie and Police Dog Bosun will be participating in the world’s greatest shave this month. Click on this link “Bosun & Algie” for further information about their fundraising endeavour.
